Icepool - Citation Lapland, Finland
The team of Kiki Smith, Lebbeus Woods and Linnaea Tillett designed a frozen pond merging art, light and ice. Working with conceptual sketches by Lebbeus and Kiki, tests were made on various types of optical material. In Finland under extreme climatic conditions where fingers froze, tie wraps snapped and optical fiber became rigid, drops of water were used as glue to hold the fiber in place. The looping pencil lines of Wood’s design were realized by strands of fiber optic light buried in three layers of ice. Streaks of light served as design and light source—revealing shadowy figures by artist Kiki Smith hovering below the surface, drawing the viewer’s gaze into its depths.

Postcards - The Staten Island September 11th Memorial - Citation
Staten Island, NY
Located on the St. George Esplanade and framing the former WTC site across New York Harbor, the memorial, entitled "Postcards," features two 40-foot-high white wing-like sculptures. Representing large-scale postcards to the loved ones who perished, each of the 267 plaques erected thus far signifies a commemorative stamp. Granite plaques bearing the names of each victim provide a disparate and haunting image. At nightfall, light adds a powerful emotional dimension and communicates the compassionate vision of the architect. The raw power of light and dark set the tone. Slots behind each plaque allow light to filter through, illuminating each profile in silhouette.

Truelightpod ® - Citation
Los Angeles, CA
Our client’s research indicated that the number one complaint they received from Focus Groups was that their make up and hair color looked different depending on the lighting conditions. We developed a room where their clients could accurately see themselves in different types of light. A hand held Chroma Meter was used, to document lighting conditions, interfaced with a custom computer program. Calibration and testing of the system took nearly one year but has allowed for extremely accurate results. The first installation in Los Angeles uses a touch screen with pre-sets duplicating light in several popular LA night clubs and restaurants, LA daylight light settings and more generalized typical settings for home, workplace and restaurants.

William J Clinton Presidential Library Exhibit Lighting - Citation
Little Rock, AR
The challenge was working with the innovative architecture and exhibition design, while meeting strict archival requirements. A unique lighting vocabulary for the project was established. Track lighting was integrated with the building architecture to light the surrounding graphics architectural details. The casework uses lockable low voltage fixtures and controllable compact fluorescent lighting, allowing both precise lighting of objects and the ability to maintain an even ambient wash for the graphics. Other areas use fiber optics to meet the archival restrictions and casework challenges. LED lighting was used to internally light many graphic panels and text.

FAO Schwarz Flagship Store- Award of Merit
New York , NY
The concept for this newly redesigned toy store was to create a dynamic and colorful ceiling display that would draw people in, while using crisp white light to accent the store’s many products. Almost 80,000 LED’s are mounted on the ceiling above the main atrium space. Each cluster of LED’s is individually addressable allowing for an endless amount programming possibilities. To keep the ceiling clean, all product lighting was mounted to either columns or one of the atrium’s two “Urban Treehouses.” Track-mounted Metal Halide PAR fixtures are integrated into the arms of the treehouses, hiding the ballast and track within.

Kirkpatrick and Lockhart, LLP - Award of Merit
New York , NY
The office of this award-winning law firm reflects their cutting edge, complex and dynamic legal style. With a fast-paced construction schedule and limited budget, the challenge was to blend existing architectural elements with new while creating a light-filled environment. To maximize ceiling heights and avoid ceiling recessed fixtures, fluorescent lighting was integrated with wall planes, millwork and architectural features where possible. This approach emphasized the spatial volumes and visually unified areas such as the reception and conference center. Lighting elements have come to shape the company’s branding by contributing to Kirtpatrick & Lockhart’s modern and elegant signature image.

Pier 1 Imports Headquarters- Award of Merit
Fort Worth, TX
The building massing for this new headquarters is very strong, and the architect was intent on our lighting design reinforcing this composition. The solid rectangular block of the building appears to be separated in half, lengthwise, by a glowing glass volume inserted into the middle. It was vital that both color and illumination levels are consistent to foster the effect of this being a continuous volume. We took the prominent end pieces that are, in fact, solid and created the illusion that they are airy and light; as if the innermost part of the building is lightest, glowing from within.

Semiramis Hotel - Award of Excellence
Athens , Greece
The challenge was to combine bold architectural design with colorful and innovative lighting solutions to create one of Europe’s most exciting, new boutique hotels. At the entry, stairs backlit by white LED’s greet guests as they appreciate the luminous green-glass balconies. Color-changing LED’s inside the glass wall create a warm, comfortable feeling within the lobby. Cool colored fluorescents below the glass vestibule floor contrast the warmer colors produced by the lobby’s color-changing wall. Custom designed bedside fluorescent sconces serve as ambient light sources and bedside reading lamps. Normally dimmed to 50%, when pivoted out from the wall, these sconces reach full-brightness, providing ample reading light.

Teatro, MGM Grand- Award of Excellence
La s Vegas, NV
The design concept was to create a sleek, sexy environment where the bar is the star of the show. Bottles embedded into the wall are backlit by video monitors while projected images create a dynamic feeling within the space. Upward facing scrolling LED ticker-tape is mounted around the perimeter of the room, creating a flickering fire effect on the red leather walls. Custom designed cocktail tables contain LED’s powered by a rechargeable battery with a custom-switching regulator to manage energy consumption. They can be charged overnight and run for up to sixteen hours. The glow from the cocktail tables provides soft “candle-light” illumination throughout the lounge.

Bank of America Trading Floor - Award of Excellence Charolette, NC
The main trading floor incorporates the use of asymmetric cove lights that are mounted within specifically designed ceiling panels. The panels contain indirect lighting and recessed down lighting to provide up to 45fc, glare free. The second trading floor has a perimeter cove light and recessed downlights integrated into architecturally constructed slots to further reduce the brightness. The combination of direct and indirect lighting creates the appropriate visual environment. The project viewed from the city creates a new and unique image for this banking institution. This image extends to the sky, which is visible to incoming planes and occupants from other buildings.
