IES Illumination Award or Lumen Award - Which is it anyway?

The IES Illumination Awards (formerly the IIDA) is the IESNA’s international public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design based upon the individual merit of each entry judged by individuals in the industry.  Submissions are accepted under the following categories:

  •      Interior Lighting Design (The Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award)
  •       Outdoor Lighting Design (The Paul Waterbury Award)
  •       Residential Lighting Design (The Aileen Page Cutler Memorial Award)
  •       The Energy and Environmental Design Award (Sponsored by Osram Sylvania)

The IESNYC Lumen Awards are the local New York City area recognition of the same.

In years past, you had to submit through your local IES Chapter Awards (aka, the Lumen), and only the award recipients would move on to be judged for an IESNA national award (aka, Illumination Award).  NOW, in order to apply for a Lumen Award you must first apply for an IES Illumination Award.  All New York City area applications submitted for an IES Illumination award, automatically get sent to the IESNYC for entry as a Lumen Award submission.

Basically what does this mean to you?  ALL submissions for Lumens are eligible for the IES Illumination Awards, not just the winners.

When applying for an Illumination Award, you must enter your submission under one of the (4) categories listed above.  However, the Lumen Awards are judged by different criteria that are listed below.  The level of award is decided by the judges:

  •   Lumen Award of Excellence - The highest level of recognition for permanent architectural application
  •   Lumen Award of Merit - Meritorious recognition for permanent architectural application
  •   Lumen Feltman Award – Recognition for excellence in retail merchandising lighting
  •   Lumen Citation - Special recognition for an art installation, technical detail, portion of a single project,
  •                              temporary  installation or other work

Submissions for the IES Illumination Awards will commence Friday, January 15th, and run through Friday, February 12th.

Approximately 2 weeks after the submission closes, the IESNYC Lumen Award Committee will hold their LIVE Judging Event for this year’s award recipients.  The IESNA holds their Illumination Award judging event in May which gives the local chapters plenty of time to judge their own awards and for submitters to make corrections as noted during local judging (also new to the process).
