    Time for Flourescents?

I know that there’s a social push to start using fluorescent lighting and that it’s a lot more efficient, but I find the lighting really unpleasant. Beyond the environmental advantages, is there another reason I should start using fluorescent lighting?

As a lighting designer I am fine with fluorescent sources in commercial spaces.  I have a real problem with them in residences.  While fluorescent lamps are not identical to incandescent sources, you should look for lamps with a Kelvin temperature of 3000 or 2700 and a CRI at least 82 (ignore marketing terms like "daylight", "warm", "full spectrum").  Unfortunately, you will not be find these lamps at local hardware stores and they need to be special ordered at electrical supply stores.I question the environmental advantages!  The IESNY presented a five part lecture series to debate the future of incandescent sources. They looked at the mercury impacts, changes to quality, health, energy codes, and sustainability issues.  You can find the entire handouts here:  http://www.iesny.org/Event.aspx?eventId=20441The real issue is how we produce electricity - not our dependence on it.  As long as we have coal burning power plants and the population continues to grow, the problem will not go away!

I agree with you there. The CFL switch has the right intentions, but its outcome could be really bad if we're leaking mercury into our environment at a drastically higher rate.

Between the lighting being much less desireable and the mercury increase that our environment stands to experience, I think CFLs are not the answer. Instead we should focus on harnessing energy from a renewable source.

Are there methods of making CFL a less harsh and artificial form of interior lighting?

    1) Start with the appropriate lamp color.  Incand/halogen color temp ranges between 2500 and 27000 deg Kelvin, consider fluorescents with a 2700 to 3000 degree Kelvin and a minimum CRI of 82.  2) Choose fixtures that conceal fluorescent lamps behind a diffuser – exposed lamps are a giveaway to the source.  3) Limit mixing incand and fluorescent in the same space.  4) Review and select interior finishes under the fluorescent source you intent to use.
