Learning to See: A Matter of Light - Howard Brandston

In his book, Howard writes to inspire and to challenge, emphasizing the need to go beyond being literate about the science of lighting. To the designer he asks, "What is it that you wish to see? Is the lighting creative? Innovative? Does the lighting enhance our quality of life?" His book Learning to See: A Matter of Light gives readers an overview of his more than 50 years of lighting design work.

Lighting Lady Liberty

The hierarchy of brilliance is established, softest-just a hint of light-at the base to give context to the Lady's place in the dark waters of New York Harbor, then gradually increasing in intensity to draw your gaze upward to the pinnacle, glowing brightest at the crown and the torch, the ultimate focal points.

Good lighting must have elements of surprise, comfort and warmth or whatever mood the space being created must achieve.

Using color to reinforce the space; color and color changing just for the sake of being able to do it has no real purpose other than glitz. It is far better to use the light as reinforcer of a space than to use the space as the backdrop for the light.
